The fourth International School in Shanghai…
The first truly international one.
Shanghai in the mid 1990’s was a much different place than it is now. In the education industry, there were only three schools for foreigners then: one American School (SAS), one German School (DSS), and one bilingual school (YCIS). We felt Shanghai needed a truly international school— a school with a diversity of international families, a school that could integrate the best practices from each country’s curriculum, and a school where new students can communicate together, making sure everyone felt part of the larger global community. Shanghai Community International School was founded in 1996 to serve that purpose.
Originally called Shanghai Changning International School, SCIS was renamed Shanghai Community International School in 2002. After steady growth in enrollment and high demand for this rigorous truly international education, SCIS opened a second campus in Pudong in 2002. In the same year, another campus was opened in Puxi. SCIS now had two campuses in Puxi—the original campus in Changning and a second campus in Hongqiao. In 2005, the Changning campus moved to its current Hongqiao Main Campus location. By 2006, enrollment had exceeded 1000 students and we celebrated our 10-year anniversary. In 2007, our Changning and Hongqiao campuses merged and we successfully implemented the IB Diploma Programme into our curriculum in the following year. In 2009, a second campus in Pudong was built and opened (the Upper School). Due to growing numbers, we opened another campus in Hongqiao, the ECE Campus, for Nursery to Grade 1 students in 2010. In 2015, the Pudong campuses merged onto the newly renovated campus, combining students of all grade levels from Nursery to Grade 12. SCIS currently consists of three campuses in Shanghai.
In 2016, we celebrated our 20th anniversary. SCIS is one of the oldest and most respected international school groups in China. We have achieved and continue to strive for world class results in community friendly environment that is truly international. As the name implies—we really are an international school community.
